Fit of Postalco Clothing

If all rocks and trees were the same shape, the world would be disturbingly boring.

Our bodies vary

A person’s body changes over time, and even within a single day. If we want our clothes to last longer they should fit a larger range of bodies. Features like sleeves that roll up easily, offset shoulder seams, and shapes that drape allow our clothing to fit more people, more comfortably.

Movement

Our functional garments are designed for exceptional freedom of movement in daily living. Mobility is a basic human need. The engineering of the clothing is complicated, but it’s designed to be used naturally.

Why do we make so few sizes?

We pattern our clothing to fit as many bodies as we can. Less size variation also means less wasted fabric and less overproduction.

Clothing for men? Or women?

Postalco items have always been non gendered. Beginning with the very first Legal Envelopes we made back in 2000.

Material

Weather Cloth

100% cotton Japan made fabric. With repeated washings it will become one of the softest items in your closet. No fillers or interfacing used in this shirt. All thickness is created with luxurious tightly woven fibers and layered fabric. This is more difficult to make but results in a shirt that will age better. We noticed this is the way 1920s vintage workwear was made and what gave those classic pieces their reliability. Our buttons are completely unbleached and natural shell. Each button is hand shaped to create a unique matte texture.

Garment Dyed
Tightly woven cotton fabric gives this shirt its great body. Garment dyed for a more comfortable fit and to fade naturally with use. It also means they are pre-shrunk.

Indigo and Mud (Ai-Doro)
Indigo plants create an iconic blue. The iron rich mud then darkens and intensifies the blue until it is almost a midnight darkness. What at first looks like black, with a closer look, consists of subtle shades of black, blue, and navy. These variations are a sign of true hand dyed process.

Amami Mud Pack
“I dunked my hand in the mud pool, expecting a gritty feeling. It was creamy smooth. The craftsman said my skin will feel great the rest of the day. It did."

Original spiral sleeve
Ordinary shirt sleeves are essentially long tubes. When you move your arm, the typical sleeve may flex a bit but still pull at the seam, resulting in limited motion and the risk of ripping your shirt. Stretch fabrics can be used but natural cotton feels so much better.

Spiral shoulder
Angled pleats on back along with our original "spiral shoulder" construction for maximum movement.

This shirt is made in a Japanese workshop with over 40 years of experience.

Shell Buttons
Our buttons are completely unbleached and natural shell. Each button is hand shaped to create a unique matte texture.

Details
・Variations in color are part of the hand dye process.
・Straight, relaxed fit.
・Full length sleeves with two button barrel cuffs for adjustability.
・This fabric is tightly woven for a unique look and soft touch.
・Woven in Japan.

Living Traditions
This 1300 year old technique gives a unique black color to textiles. Hand dyed by Kanai Kougei on Amami Oshima Island in the south of Japan. Using time-tested techniques they transform natural materials into beautiful objects.
