What is Kurume Kasuri?
Even with strong geometric patterns, this fabric has subtle variations that create a calming, dreamlike quality—like walking through a forest where varied trees and stones create relaxation. These traditional patterns began when 12-year-old weaving master Den Inoue began experimenting with dyed and undyed threads. These methods were preserved and passed down for 200 years.

About inserts

Snap Pad Inserts

Choose from a variety of Snap Pad paper and accessories—Snap Calendar, Snap Pockets, and Fabric Tabs. We've seen people use these for habit tracking, file folders, menus, meeting notes, and tons of other purposes.

Snap Paper
Versatile paper with a texture that keeps the pen from slipping too easily and makes it an ideal writing surface to keep thoughts flowing. Suitable for writing or drawing. Page thickness prevents most show-through. This paper is ecologically made and chlorine free. Notebook pages are printed with Pin-graph, Postalco's original 1x1mm blue graph paper.

More

Snap Paper Plain
Cream color that is easy on your eyes. Versatile paper with a texture that keeps the pen from slipping too easily and makes it an ideal writing surface to keep thoughts flowing. Suitable for writing or drawing. This paper feels great with ballpoint pen, gel ink, pencil, and fountain pens. Page thickness prevents most show-through. No feathering. Paper made with pulp from managed forests.
Alkaline paper made to resist yellowing and aging.

Steno Paper

We came across stenographer paper and immediately liked the centerline for taking notes. It is quicker taking notes in a narrow column since you don't have to move your hand all the way from the far right back to the left side each time to start a new line. Stenographers' special abbreviated alphabets and tools are made to write at lightning speed to perfectly record a conversation as it unfolds. Steno paper also works well for To Do lists.

More

Snap Memo Pad
A place to keep meeting notes together. This notebook snaps into the Snap Pad. It’s as flat as possible to leave space for the other pages. This unique construction allows notes to be made easily while inside the Snap Pad.

More

Snap Calendar
The Snap Pad refillable notebook is now a calendar.
Each sheet shows one month with note taking lines on the backside so you can keep track of upcoming events or record things after they happen.

More

Snap Pocket
The asymmetrical flap is easy to open while secured in the Snap Pad. The flap can be tucked inside to form an open pocket or closed to keep your items safe. Tickets, postcards, business cards, invitations, feathers, receipts—keep them all here.

Fabric Tabs
An accent that adds organization. At work, with friends, or even by yourself, digging around trying to find something doesn't feel good. That is the beauty of a tab—one finger can take you to the exact thing you want. Tip: attach to a blank sheet to use in different locations. Can write on tabs with pen, permanent marker, or pencil.

Material

Kurume Kasuri
200 years ago during the Edo period a 12 year old girl named Den Inoue noticed a white dot on her kimono fabric. Unravelling the threads to get a better look she realized that two of the crossing threads were not dyed, creating a white spot. After much experimenting she discovered that wrapping threads before dying them was a new way of making patterned fabric.

Okamoto Shoten, a 3rd generation family business, connects the craftspeople necessary to create this fabric. They are based in Fukuoka (Northern Kyushu) where this technique is still practiced.
Working with Okamoto Shoten we chose fabric woven from up to 40 years ago up until recently.

More details Right

The River
Surprisingly calm and wide, the Chikugo River has shaped the land over thousands of years. Known for spilling into towns and creating fertile soil ideal for vegetables—and for this fabric, cotton and indigo plants. Below several rumbling highway bridges, the river quietly rolls along.

Tie. Dye. Weave.
This 200-year-old technique involves tying small thread bundles, then dyeing and weaving them with expert precision. Careful calculation determines which parts of the threads are tied and dyed, while the weaver adjusts the fibers constantly to form patterns. Without precision, it quickly becomes a chaotic pile of thread spaghetti.

The Well
One of the oldest Kasuri patterns and one of our favorites is the Igeta pattern. It’s shaped like two overlapping equal signs. Originally based on the shape of a water well seen from above in traditional Japanese villages. Japanese Kasuri is known for its strong vertical and horizontal geometry and bold colors, often blue and white.

How to use
To use make holes in the top edge of the papers with a standard 2-hole puncher and snap them into the Snap Pad. To use the A5 size, just cut the A4 (or 8½ x 11") papers in half, punch holes, and snap them in! For A6 size, cut the A4 paper into four equal pieces. Each holds about 100 sheets.

Personalize to your liking
Everyone has their own way of using the Snap Pad. Choose from a variety of Snap Pad paper and accessories—Snap Calendar, Snap Pockets, and Fabric Tabs. We've seen people use these for habit tracking, file folders, menus, meeting notes, and tons of other purposes. The Snap Pad allows for functions to be discovered by the person using it.

Keep it full of paper and kids or adults can make drawings whenever the mood strikes.

Writing something down allows us to think better. The spontaneous mixture of previous and current thoughts is what keeps the flow of ideas going.

We wanted a notepad that people can use in whatever way suits them at the moment.

Making the invisible visible
Stationery makes invisible, but important things into something visible. The moment you close a digital display or phone, your calendar is gone. That’s what we feel is not satisfying about some digital solutions for things like to-do lists. There is still a very clear function for paper and stationery.

Easy on your eyes
Snap Pad refills--Snap Paper and Steno Paper.

Snap Pad Accessories
Limit distractions and return to mindfulness with paper. The refillable Snap Pad, calendar, and accessories help us balance digital with paper to make each day more meaningful.

Accidental creation
The idea for the Snap Pad came about accidentally when our designer Mike Abelson was playing with the snap on his calendar cover. He snapped in a memo card that happened to have a hole in it and noticed how satisfying it is to snap paper into place.

Prototype Snap Pad. The hole width matches the standard two-hole punch found in Asia and Europe.

Learning from Japan
The craftspeople, suppliers, and small workshops found in Japan make things not to be found anywhere else. We are fortunate to work with family businesses that are so focused on their craft. Don’t put Postalco items on a shelf or in a drawer. Their beauty is revealed through daily use. They will help you feel good at home and be ready in a meeting.
