Why do we make so few sizes?

We pattern our clothing to fit as many bodies as we can. Less size variation also means less wasted fabric and less overproduction.

Clothing for men? Or women?

Postalco items have always been non gendered. Beginning with the very first Legal Envelopes we made back in 2000.

Material

100% cotton Japan made fabric. Screen printing by hand creates slight natural variations giving the pattern subtle depth. With repeated washings it will become one of the softest items in your closet. No fillers or interfacing used in this shirt. All thickness is created with luxurious tightly woven fibers and layered fabric. This is more difficult to make but results in a shirt that will age better. We noticed this is the way 1920s vintage workwear was made and what gave those classic pieces their reliability. Our buttons are completely unbleached and natural shell. Each button is hand shaped to create a unique matte texture.

Care

・Delicate machine wash 30℃ with like colors.
・Warm iron as needed, or dry clean.
・Do not bleach.
・Shade dry only, no tumble dry.
・100% cotton
・There is a small chance the color may crock or bleed, especially when wet.

Free Arm Wear on the body
To enjoy your shirt from the first few moments, Postalco invented Free Arm Wear. Carefully sewn into unique combinations of shapes that don't restrict the way you reach, stretch, and move in daily life. Postalco's Free Arm Wear with v-shaped pleats on the back mean ease of movement and flexibility.

Good clothing responds to the wearer.
It shouldn't jump out in front of the wearer, and it shouldn’t stick to the body too closely either. It doesn't get in your way and feels excellent. It can be seen at a glance from across the street and also it is noticed when you reach for something across the table. It is good-natured and also reliable. It doesn't impose.

Postalco teamed up with textile designer Cassie McGettigan to create this pattern.

Postalco Plaid
Vertical stripes. Horizontal stripes. Combine them both and you get a grid. Traditional plaids can be a bit stuffy. But this grid is less predictable and a bit playful. And it is still as wearable as a classic plaid shirt.

Developing This Shirt
To eliminate the typical stiffness we started with sketches and prototypes made from paper (we love paper). We then worked with an expert pattern maker and craftspeople in Japan to make many samples to get the shirt we dreamed of wearing. This shirt is made in a Japanese workshop with over 40 years of experience.

Master Printers in Tokyo
Silk screening by hand creates slight natural variations giving the pattern subtle depth. The experts at Okuda Senko have honed their skills on both textiles and prints for artists. Their print studio is inspiring. Long narrow tables 25 meters long, the length of a swimming pool. But instead of water, ink is carefully guided onto the lengths of fabric by hand.

Print testing
Many overlapping color tests were made to get the colors just right.
