STAKKO Block Shelf Set 2×2
The STAKKO Block Shelf consists of functional wood boxes made from solid chestnut wood with a top and base pieces for stability. Use this for home, home-office or display. Assembly is easy without special tools, as the blocks connect simply with hand-tightened bolts. Made in Japan.
Material
Chestnut wood / Polyurethane finish
As wood is a natural product, variations in color and pattern will occur. Wooden furniture will also change appearance over time as it is affected by the environment in which it is placed. Each piece of wood is unique. Wood color depends on where the tree grew. Within the wood grain variations of brown, gray, darker, and lighter sections naturally occur. Branches also affect the grain. Especially found in oak is an irregular grain pattern called in Japanese the ‘tora’. Natural knots, ‘tora’, grain, and color variations are considered ‘natural marks’ and are unique to each piece of wood. Where one piece of wood joins another the grain, texture and color may especially stand out. Since every natural variation is visible, only the best wood can be used. It is more difficult to make furniture this way, but we feel it is worth it. Tray Top, Bottom and Ken-don Cover use natural veneer and mdf for stability.
Coating: there is a light water resistant polyurethane finish on the wood ideal for daily use. The natural color and grain of wood are intentionally not hidden. Compared with oil finishes it is a more durable surface protection. It helps reduce dirt gathering on the surface.
Japan-Grown Hardwood
Japanese hardwoods are usually not used for furniture focused on efficiency. This is because their supply volume is inconsistent, and tall trees that provide a large amount of uniform material are rare. As a result, about 95% of Japan’s hardwood yield is processed into wood chips for paper pulp.
Karimoku Furniture, however, is able to use domestic hardwoods such as maple, chestnut, and oak. Trees that grow in Japan’s mountainous regions adapt to harsh environments by bending, or developing unique grain patterns as they mature. Instead of seeing these characteristics as flaws, Karimoto embraces them as the natural individuality of the material - its grain, color, patterns, and knots.

Dovetail joints are used by Karimoku Furniture in the production of STAKKO. This traditional wood joinery combines dovetails and mortises, resembling the shape of a bird’s tail. Usually, this type of joinery is applied to the inside of furniture and is rarely displayed on a piece’s exterior. We incorporated the symmetrical beauty of the dovetail as a key design element, giving a finish that is functional, and aesthetic.
Made with wood from managed forests in Japan.
