Pebble Deerskin

Vegetable tanning and the fine texture of this leather creates a surface that looks like small pebbles or river sand. Compared with other leathers it is stronger and more flexible. The secret is in the fine structure of the leather itself. Scratches and surface wear blend in to become part of the patina created with use.

Ancient techniques

Traditional use of deerskin in Japan goes back over 1000 years. Revered and masterfully applied to gloves and other tools essential in Japanese Archery. Due to its superior qualities deerskin also was used in jackets worn by firefighters, footwear, and joined the pieces of samurai armour. It takes special skill to craft deerskin. It was so indispensable that warring feudal lords competed for the best leather craftspeople.

Veg tanned for reduced chemical and environmental impact.

This full grain deerskin is tanned using vegetable tannins. Making veg tanned and aniline dyed leather takes more time but does not use the toxic compounds needed for chrome tanned leather.

How We Dye Our Leather

The variation from skin to skin and even within the same skin is a sign of natural leather. The typical way to make leather color uniform is to cover the surface with thick synthetic fillers and pigment coatings, covering the natural variations in surface and color. Unfortunately this finish does not allow scratches to blend in or improve over time. Postalco leather is colored using aniline dyes. Aniline dyes soak into the leather leaving visible the natural variation in grain and texture. The more aniline dyed leather is used, the better the surface patina gets over time. Each skin is different: a faint stripe-like pattern, called ‘tora’ in Japanese is a natural effect due to the way the dye soaks into the various parts of the skin. Each skin's tora is different. Making Veg tanned and Aniline dyed leather is more expensive and time consuming but produces beautiful leathers.

Care

Pebble Deerskin

Leather color may crock or bleed. Especially take care with light colors which may come in contact with this product. If your item gets wet do not rub: quickly daub liquid with a soft dry cloth. Dry in the shade. Colors may fade with exposure to light. Postalco Pebble Deerskin is already treated with oil so it does not need leather cremes. Leather cremes may stain this leather. Small scratches and water stains can be blended in with a water moistened, tightly squeezed cloth. Wipe over the entire leather surface to gently make small scratches and water stains less noticeable.
