Making Farmer's Felt

We wondered if it was possible to develop a thick washi, instead of leather, for a new kind of wallet. Over a year of development resulted in a material durable enough to be used. More like a felt than what we think of as paper, Farmer’s Felt was born. Less than half the weight of leather of the same thickness, Farmer’s Felt is an interlocked vegetable fiber felt.

Improves with age

With use, the hand-screened washi fibers relax and Farmer’s Felt molds to the contents carried, developing a fine sheen and patina.

Sustainable fiber

Kozo (mulberry) bark fibers are the strongest of the washi fibers and are the main ingredient in Farmer’s Felt. Mulberry is grown as a sustainable farm crop, regenerating every year.

Nest fabric

These papers are not printed but are the result of carefully combining two separate pools of fiber colors which swirl and blend together creating the unique pattern in each sheet. The combined colored fibers look a little like the carefully assembled interior of a bird’s nest. Each sheet of our original Nest Paper is then hand polished in the traditional method with the famously smooth tsubaki leaf. The irregularity in color, surface texture and thickness are a part of the handmade nature of Nest Farmer’s Felt paper. Even though Farmer’s Felt is strong for paper, gentle handling is required. Water resistant treated.

Farmer's Felt

These handmade papers use much longer fibers than standard machine made papers. When soaked in water and strained over a screen by master paper makers these fibers intertwine into a strong layer. Getting an even layer of fibers over the wooden framed screens is deceptively simple looking. A mixture of fibers and water are scooped onto large wooden framed screens. The paper craftsmen skillfully move the frames to allow the water to flow back and forth across the screen interlocking the fibers. This creates a thick layer of fibers, less like paper and more like felt. To remove excess water the sheets are carefully lifted and pressed flat with hand rollers. Polishing each sheet by hand with the famously smooth fresh tsubaki leaf (Japanese camelia) finishes the unique texture.

Learning from Japan

The craftspeople, suppliers, and small workshops found in Japan make things not to be found anywhere else. We are fortunate to work with family businesses that are so focused on their craft. Don’t put Postalco items on a shelf or in a drawer. Their beauty is revealed through daily use. They will help you feel good at home and be ready in a meeting.
