Bags for men? Or women?

Postalco items have always been non gendered. Beginning with the very first Legal Envelopes we made back in 2000.

Material

Crossgrain Leather

We named this leather ‘Crossgrain’ for the pattern embossed on the surface. These crossing lines help small scratches that appear with use to blend in more easily. Because of its strength and thickness steer leather is often used for items that need to be durable. This leather is vegetable tanned using tannins from the mimosa tree. Vegetable tanning takes more time but does not use the toxic compounds needed for chrome tanned leather.

How we dye our leather

There is quite a bit of variation from skin to skin and even within the same skin. The typical way to make leather color uniform is to cover the surface with thick synthetic fillers and pigment coatings, covering the natural variations in surface and color. Unfortunately this finish does not allow scratches to blend in or improve over time. Postalco leather is colored using aniline dyes. Aniline dyes soak into the leather leaving visible the natural variation in grain and texture. The more aniline dyed leather is used, the better the surface patina gets over time. Each skin is different: a faint stripe-like pattern, called ‘tora’ in Japanese is a natural effect due to the way the dye soaks in to the various parts of the skin. Each skins ‘tora’ is different. Making Veg tanned and Aniline dyed leather is more expensive and time consuming but produces beautiful leathers.

Lining

Why use leather lining inside the pockets? Your eyes may not see it but your hands do. Pigskin feels great as a lining material and will last much longer than fabric linings.

Care

Crossgrain Leather

To keep the natural surface of this material we have only coated this leather with a light water resistant treatment. Naturally finished leathers and materials may crock or rub off. Please take care to keep your wallet dry. If it gets wet in the rain or with water it is more likely for the colors to crock. If it does get wet pat dry with a soft cloth. Shade dry. To help blend in small scratches and dirt marks please moisten a soft cloth with water and wipe gently. Be sure to wipe the overall surface, not just in one area to avoid staining. Shade dry. Oily leather creams will stain this bag so we don’t recommend them. If the surface gets dry, please use a mild creme (such as clear Delicate Shoe Cream) to replenish the moisture. Be sure to use only clear cream as any color will rub off! At Postalco to get the leather moisturizer into the nooks and crannies we use a toothbrush to apply the cream.

Made by a master metal craftsman in Japan. It took us more than a year to develop this brass hardware. Patent pending.

Our original U-Lock
Inspired by old parachuting hardware, this lock opens and closes with one hand. In a smooth movement, pulling up on the U-part lifts the flap.

Drawings for the U Lock
This hardware started with a dream of a piece of hardware that only had a U-shape visible.

Paper Prototype for the U Lock

Inner pocket
Inside zipper pocket so your essentials stay secure.

Sharks
Looking at a picture book of dinosaurs there was a creature with a shell and long neck like a turtle but with sharp teeth jutting out. Mind-bending. I was surprised to see in the middle of these wildly shaped dinosaurs, a regular looking shark! I guess sharks nonchalantly swam around then just the way they do now. Other dinosaurs are gone, but the shark survives. There must be something about sharks that works.

Sharks & Mail Bags
Sharks are like mailbags that postmen carry. Since the Middle Ages messenger's leather mail bags have not changed much. Slung diagonally over the shoulder so that you can move the bag easily from the back to the front of the body for quick access. A flap protects letters from the rain. Like sharks, mailbags survive.

Make it last
We’re at a turning point where we can't just keep throwing everything away. Things that last a long time, and look good doing it, mean a less disposable daily life.

Learning from Japan
The craftspeople, suppliers, and small workshops found in Japan make things not to be found anywhere else. We are fortunate to work with family businesses that are so focused on their craft. Don’t put Postalco items on a shelf or in a drawer. Their beauty is revealed through daily use. They will help you feel good at home and be ready in a meeting.
